VANDERBURGH COUNTY, IN—Indiana’s On My Way Pre-K program is currently accepting applications from eligible families who would like free prekindergarten for their four-year-olds. The deadline to apply for the 2016-2017 school year is March 25, 2016. Families are encouraged to apply now at www.onmywayprek.org.
On My Way Pre-K is Indiana’s preschool pilot program. On My Way Pre-K awards grants that fund early education services in approved private schools, public schools, and community-based early education programs. Approved programs have met standards for Level 3 or Level 4 in Paths to QUALITY™, Indiana’s voluntary child care quality rating and improvement system, or are nationally or regionally accredited by an approved pre-K accrediting body.
Eligible families have household incomes at or below 127% of federal poverty guidelines (about $30,000 for a family of four), live in Vanderburgh County or one of four other pilot counties, and have a child who will be four years old by August 1 of this year.
The Southwest Indiana Business Leaders Roundtable, chaired by Ron Romain of United Companies, provided funding to meet the required 10 percent local matching fund requirement for the grants. Gifts from Old National Bank, Vectren Corp, the Welborn Baptist Foundation, United Companies, St Mary’s Health, and Deaconess Health System contributed to the match.
A randomized lottery will occur in April for families who have applied and are eligible. Families who receive a grant will receive a congratulatory letter, family agreement, and a provider information form from the Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning. Families will choose a program from the list of approved On My Way Pre-K providers at www.onmywayprek.org. Parents can also receive assistance with the selection process by calling 4C and speaking with a consumer education specialist: 812-423-4008 or 1-800-299-1627.
